Guild Wars 2 Item Upgrade
The stats of an item are improved by upgrading it, also referred to as "upping". Each upgrade increment gives a linear increase in a given stat.
Players can recycle up to six items at a time to gain an ability to gauge the level of each of the item's upgraded components. The cost of recycling a piece of equipment increases depending on their rarity and level.
Upgrade components
A level upgrade in Guild Wars 2 is a process that can boost the effectiveness of your weapons and armor. If you do have a non-useful rune or glyph that has not yet been incorporated into your gear, you can move it to another piece of gear by using the upgrade Glyphs context menu within the Glyphs panel. This will create the new Glyph Set with the selected glyph.
You can remove the glyph using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or an Ascended Salvage tool. The item will be destroyed within which it is placed however, you can salvage the upgraded item using the glyph and its shards therefore, it shouldn't be considered a loss.
The addition of a glyph to an item can cause it to become unstable, and the shards of that glyph will disappear from your inventory when you dismantle the item. Each reroll token grants players a new random affix, which is typically superior to the original. Reroll tokens can be used to boost the weapon's stats to increase damage or bonuses.
Rerolled items do not appear in the menu of upgrade options, however they are still able to be upgraded. When you press the "upgrade button" you can recycle these items that have been rerolled. This will change the layout of the item's window, and allow up to six items be chosen to recycle. Recycling an item adds small amount of points to its level gauge. This amount is determined based on the item's rarity as well as its level. Therefore, items that are higher level are more valuable for recycling than items with lower levels.
Players can also use Reroll Tokens and Star Remnants to roll rerolling Weapon Traits for upgraded units. Rerolls will roll a % chance of a weapon's traits. If it is higher, the weapon is upgraded. If it rolls lower the weapon remains as is. Weapons can be repeated up to three times.

Leveling
