Path of Exile Item Upgrades
Upgrades to items are a common and important way to improve the performance of numerous items in Path of Exile. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.
Often times however upgraded Common and Magic gear is outclassed by Rare-grade gear due to their requirements.
Armor
Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They boost the performance of the item that they're attached to. Upgrades to armor can be found in the world of the game and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at bonfires. They can also be salvaged using a professional or higher salvage kits to retrieve upgrades from the items.
The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it is able to take on. The ability to absorb damage of an armor piece will increase when it is upgraded to the highest upgrade level. However, it's important to note that this will also increase its weight, which will cause it to weigh more than before.
There are several different types of armor upgrade available in the game. Each one has a distinct effect. For instance, certain upgrades give the armor a certain amount of health points while others make it stronger and lighter. The type of armor upgrade that an item can receive will be indicated by the name of the upgrade as shown in the table below.
Some of the upgrades also require magic or a hybrid technology and magic, as shown by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table. Some upgrades also require charges to use, which is identified by a "Charges" entry in the table below. The charges associated with these upgrades refresh daily or never expire depending on the upgrade.
Iron Ore is the cheapest method to upgrade your armor. You can locate it by exploring and looting small loot chests. Titanium is more costly, but is readily available at the smelters of Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Weapons
Weapon upgrades allow players to improve the effectiveness of certain aspects of an weapon. Upgrades can increase the accuracy of a rifle or the damage caused by shotgun shells. Some weapons also have special upgrades that enhance their inherent characteristics. They include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and minimizes overheating of the weapon) and Kinetic Coils (increases the speed of projectiles to cause more damage).
The majority of upgrades for weapons require a whetblade. It's one of three Power Dices and a different amount of Minerals and Erons. They can be obtained by completing side quests or killing a certain amount of monsters and bosses.

Most players will want to prioritize weapon upgrades for the weapons they most often use to help them level up faster. Players should also upgrade the weapons their squadmates utilize to increase their power. Shepard, for example, should upgrade the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R. This will increase the effectiveness of the weapon when used in conjunction by biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.
Jewels
Jewels can be used to improve a stat or provide secondary effects on weapons and armor. Jewelry crafting is the process of making them, in which you combine a gemstone with a number specific reagents on a jewelry table. The higher the level of the gemstone is, the greater its secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses in the world, or through finding Legendary Gear. The Jeweler can improve the quality of the gem in stages that range from Crude up to Royal. Based on the tier of the gem it will give different stat boosts when it is inserted into weapons, gear and jewelry.
The Jeweler can create the highest levels of gems with the exception of rare and legendary ones that you must be at certain levels to gain. Jewels can be replaced with another one without damaging the original. However, you can only replace one jewel in a piece of equipment once.
It is normal to use more jewels to enhance the appearance of. In addition to enhancing performance, the jewels also create an outer layer that is more durable than metal, so repeated friction from pivots doesn't cause damage as easily.
In addition to the above-mentioned upgrades additionally, players can get glyphs for their shields and weapons from a Glyphmaster. The first trinket a player can unlock is the cloak. It grants a small, but useful bonus in speed of movement and the ability to evade. Then, they can purchase amulets, rings and necklaces in a similar fashion to how the player can acquire weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has a slot for an upgrade which can be universal or jewel. Universal upgrades are smaller and can be utilized on any piece of equipment. Jewels are not upgradeable or replaced and only work with certain trinkets.
These trinkets also grant additional bonuses and abilities that are active even when the character is not in combat. This lets the hero perform better when they are not active and also helps to compensate for the absence of a strong team or the absence of any slots from the talent tree that normally are filled with hero's ideal stats.
As a general rule trinket upgrades should be prioritized over BiS (Best in Slot) items you won't replace in the near future. Next, any items that have desirable statistics aren't as significant as the iLevel for the item to be upgraded. This is especially true if an item has multiple stats you'd like to upgrade, as it's usually more beneficial to upgrade one crucial stat than two subpar ones.
